PUBLIC VOICES THOUGHT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM: Fellowship Application for AY2018‐2019


SUMMARY: The purpose of the Public Voices Thought Leadership Fellows Program is to provide scholars whose voices are underrepresented in the media (particularly women and under‐ represented groups) with the resources, support and skills to dramatically increase their visibility and influence as thought leaders in academia and the world at large.

PROGRAM DETAILS:
• One year program
• Cohort of 20 scholars, comprised of full‐time faculty across all disciplines
• Quarterly in‐person seminars on the Evanston campus around thought leadership
• Weekly/regular dedicated coaching and editing from top journalists
• Structured conversations with media gatekeepers/savants (NYT, CNN, Wikipedia)
• Ongoing Mentoring (1 year follow‐up, with our Mentor‐Editor team)

APPLICATION MATERIALS:
1. In 300 words or less, describe your research or scholarship.
2. In 300 words or less, describe why your research or scholarship is of public value and can inform the important conversations of our day beyond academia.
3. In 300 words or less, tell us why you want to have a public voice.
4. In 300 words or less, tell us how you or your ideas are underrepresented in our public conversations.
5. Provide curriculum vitae (including academic, non‐academic publications and TV appearances) of no more than 5 pages.

REQUIREMENTS:
1. If you are accepted into the program, you must be able to attend all four quarterly gatherings to be held at Crown Hardin Hall, 633 Clark Street, Evanston. Attendance is non‐negotiable and any absences must be made up by attending the relevant seminar portion at another program.

• Thursday, November 1 (9:00am‐4:00pm) and Friday, November 2, 2018 (9:00am‐2:00pm)
• Friday, January 25, 2019 (9:00am‐4:00pm)
• Friday, March 8, 2019 (9:00am‐4:00pm)
• Friday, May 17, 2019 (9:00am‐4:00pm)

2. You must have a full‐time active appointment for the academic year, and cannot have any planned leaves for the year.

3. If you are accepted into the program, you must commit to write (with the support of the program) a minimum of two op‐ed essays. (Note: we expect all participants to make every effort to publish a minimum of two op‐eds, and hopefully many more.)

4. Participation is limited to full‐time faculty members who have not already completed a program, either at NU or elsewhere.
